What are Hotspots?

Hotspots are painful inflamed patches on the a dog’s skin and sores, at times oozing some pus may be seen on a dog’s skin and may often spread quickly. It is a localized area of skin inflammation and infection. They often begin as a small red patch, which worsens into a bigger reddish painful lesion due to bacteria infections. Often you will see your dog licking and chewing the area where the small red patch began.

Common causes of itching & scratching cycle include:

  • Food Allergies
  • Contact irritants
  • Stress / boredom licking resulting in excessive licking
  • Dirty and matted coat
  • Moisture trapped in fur coat (especially in Singapore’s weather)

Hot spots in dogs may be a frequent recurring issue if not managed properly by pet owners. Dog breeds that have thicker coats like Japanese Spitz, Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians and even Poodles. This is because there can be excess build up of moisture trapped in between their coats and skin. Hence, due to the climate regular pet grooming is highly recommended in Singapore to prevent moisture from getting trapped in between a dog’s coat.

Prevention

To prevent hot spots from occurring, undercoat removal for dogs during pet grooming as well as getting a dog’s coat well brushed out during a dog grooming session is recommended on a monthly basis in Singapore.

Breeds like poodles, for example, where their coat is curly. Regular monthly dog grooming sessions are recommended to prevent any dirt and excess moisture from being trapped in between the matted fur coat. Resulting in the possibility of hot spots seen in poodles.

For double coated breeds like Japanese Spitz, Shiba Inus and Pomeranians, frequent basic grooming sessions are needed to remove any excess undercoat which can possibly lead to hot spots.

Allergies

Food Allergies in dogs are also notoriously responsible for causing hot spots to occur in our pet dogs.  A dog might have consumed an ingredient like eg; beef, bread, chicken, eggs, corn, wheat or even grains. Their bodies are unable to tolerate such ingredients and hence react to it, which may have resulted in hot spots occurring in dogs. Try eliminating ingredients one by one to find out which type of ingredients your dogs are able to tolerate.

Environment

Environmental allergies such as dust can cause skin itching as very fine dust gets trapped in between the coat and skin or get absorbed into the skin coupled with hot and humid weather. When dogs hide underneath furniture (sofa, bed, etc) dust gets trapped, which then might lead to hot spots in dogs.

Contact Allergies such as an allergy to floor detergent/ bleach is also possible in causing hot spots to occur in dogs. Consider changing your floor detergent to a milder pet safe one or using hot water to mop your flooring instead.
